Thank you for your enquiry.

Our nursery was established in January 1982 in a GLC funded, purpose built facility in the grounds of St.George’s Hospital. It was the first nursery of its kind in the country designed specifically to cater for the childcare needs of parents who worked shifts or unsocial hours.

Children are accepted from 1 year of age into The Tiny Tots Room, and continue with us until they leave for Primary School at 5 years.

The Nursery is an independent non-profit making charitable limited company, which is managed by a voluntary management committee comprising of nominees from St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and directors. The management committee and nursery management team (consisting of the Administrator and Childcare Co-ordinator) meet on a bi-monthly basis.

The Nursery is inspected and registered annually by Ofsted, under the regulations of the Children Act 1989. Our registration number is 123091.

If you think, after reading the following information, that you are interested in a place, please fill out the appropriate application form and return it to us. A card will be sent to you acknowledging receipt – when you receive this you can phone to make an appointment to visit if you would like.

Environment

The welcoming environment of the Nursery offers parents/guardians the opportunity of becoming fully involved in life at the nursery. The Nursery is fully equipped and monitored by CCTV cameras with finger print scanners which enable parents and carers to gain safe access to the Nursery.

Aims

Our aims are to provide a caring and stimulating environment, whilst maintaining the highest possible standards for the children during their important pre-school years, freeing their parents to continue with their careers with peace of mind in the knowledge that their child is safe and happy.

Settling In Period

For each child starting at the Nursery we have a settling-in period of one week (for which no fee is charged). This gives the child and parent an opportunity of getting to know their key worker and other staff, the nursery environment and routines on a gradually increasing scale. We would normally expect the first visit to last about an hour, the second visit to last longer and so on until the child can be left by the parent for the best part of the day by the end of the week.

Key Person System

Each Nursery Officer/Nursery Assistant (with the exception of the floaters) is allocated a group of children (the number contained in the group varies according to age group). Each key person is directly responsible for the children in their group, including the settling-in period, teeth cleaning, lunchtime supervision, toilet training etc.

Each parent will be introduced to the key person concerned and the progress/problems of their child can be informally discussed on a regular basis. A key person sheet is stored in the child’s drawer and completed each day, with details of your child’s day (ie how much lunch your child ate/how much sleep/any accidents and any other relevant information).

Activities & Play

All children are provided with age and developmental related activities and equipment incorporating The Early Years Foundation Stage. No formal teaching is given to the children as we believe that many of the important pre-school skills, ie social, emotional, intellectual, physical and language skills are learned through play, activities and themes provided, thus preparing them for school.

Each day all children have access to many of the following activities:

Water
Sand
Playdough
Clay
Cooking
Creative play – including dressing-up / home corner / hairdressing etc
Painting in many forms – including splash / butterfly / potato printing etc
Cutting and sticking
Junk modeling
Singing
Storytime
Music and movement

All toys, activities and themes provided by the Nursery cater for the children’s multi-cultural needs and understanding.

Playground

We are extremely lucky to have a lovely large garden for the Children to play out in. The garden has some artificial grass and some safety surface, keeping the children as safe as possible whilst they are participating in outside play.

We have many items of large play equipment, including climbing frames and bicycles, enabling the children to experience large manipulative play.

The children have daily use of the garden, weather permitting.

Outings

The Nursery occasionally organises outings for the children. A notice is put up in advance in your child’s room to inform you of any outing and requesting your agreement. A small fee may be charged for refreshments or entrance fees.

Food Preparation

The Nursery employs a full-time Cook and Kitchen Assistant, hence all the food preparations take place on the premises. Our Kitchen has a five star rating in food hygiene and cleanliness from Environmental Health.

The Nursery offers a wide variety of fresh foods and caters for medical dietary requirements and vegetarians.

Children arriving before 8.00am will be given breakfast consisting of cereal, toast and water or milk.

Birthdays

We would love to celebrate your child’s birthday and would be happy to have a party at tea-time on the day.

If you would like our Cook to bake you a cake, please let her know in advance. A nominal charge of £4 will be made for this.

Parent’s Representatives

The management committee/trustees of the nursery consists of many volunteers which includes some parents.

The committee meets approximately every three months. Please ask if you would like further information.
